A foster carer who tragically lost her own daughter to suicide has been able to turn a tragedy into a legacy of hope.
Her nominator said: “On May 10, 2020, Sinead Gibson’s beloved daughter Diva Gibson, sadly lost her life to suicide.
“Despite this unimaginable tragedy, Sinead has campaigned tirelessly since that day to spread kindness, awareness of suicide prevention and support for those with mental health issues, as well as anyone else who needs help.”
She added: “Last year Sinead created and produced the Every Little Thing Festival to support wellness and mental health, and it is planned to be held annually as near as possible to September 10, which is Diva’s birthday and World Suicide Prevention Day.”
The aim is to provide a totally safe, supported festival, where people can learn more about mental health care, suicide prevention, and receive help if needed.
“It’s very emotional to win the award,” said Sinead.
“I’m from Manchester originally. I came here with two bags when I was 20. fled domestic violence and came here more than 30 years ago so to now be recognised by the Pride of Reading is amazing, I feel like I’ve been adopted by Reading.
“Mental health is so important. We all go through mental health difficulties, it’s become so important because I know first hand how high the risks are. Hope is so important, and that’s why ce created the festival to bring the community together and get people support from local charities
and organisations.”
