Reading FC legend Kevin Doyle has set a high target for the Royals and believes that they should be aiming to win the league this season.
The Royals made a patchy start to life with Leam Richardson but have found improved form in recent weeks which has seen them move up the League One table in the early stages.
The Reading owners have made it no secret that promotion is the ambition this season and Royals legend Doyle agrees that is what the club should be targeting.
Doyle was part of the unforgettable Reading side that achieved 106 points in the 2005/06 season to win promotion to the top flight.
Speaking to OLBG, who offer the Best Betting Sites at https://www.olbg.com/bookmakers.php, Doyle said: “Their aim should be to win the league, to be honest, they’re a big club in League One.
“They’ll need Marriott scoring goals, and there’s no better start for a centre-forward than scoring a hat-trick, that sets you up for the season.”
Doyle was full of praise for Marriott, who has been in exceptional scoring form since arriving from Wrexham last summer, despite suffering some injury issues.
Doyle continued: “Jack Marriott has been excellent. I was at Reading about a month before the end of last season, and they didn’t play well that day. They were outfought and outbattled by Lincoln City.
“Lincoln were there and secured promotion that day and I was disappointed in Reading’s performance and attitude. That needs to change this year.
“I watched them, and I just felt there wasn’t much good to be seen on the pitch that day.
“It was late in the season, and it can be a bit like that sometimes, but I expected more from them because they still had a chance of making the playoffs, and losing that game basically ended that chance. It wasn’t great, to be honest, but they weren’t far off from making the playoffs at the time.”
