A Berkshire football league supporting more than 5,000 young players has been named League of the Year at a national grassroots football awards ceremony.
The Berkshire County Girls League received the honour at the England Football Grassroots Football Awards, presented by Howdens.
League chairwoman Coral John was presented with the award by Match of the Day presenter Mark Chapman at a ceremony held before the FA Community Shield between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on 16 August.
Mrs John was also given the opportunity to take part in a guard of honour as the two teams entered the pitch before kick-off.
The Berkshire County Girls League was founded 15 seasons ago with the aim of creating inclusive opportunities for girls to play and develop through football.
It has since grown to support more than 5,000 players between under-six and under-18 level.
Mrs John said the award reflected the work of the league’s volunteers.
“It is an incredible honour to receive this prestigious award, but its true meaning lies in the passion and commitment of our amazing volunteers, who have created so much more than a league.
“The greatest reward is seeing every girl step onto the field feeling safe, valued and confident, with the belief that she belongs.”
More than 12,200 nominations were submitted across 12 categories for this year’s England Football Grassroots Football Awards.
James Kendall, the FA’s director of football development, said the awards celebrated the volunteers who helped grassroots football thrive across the country.
He added: “Huge congratulations go to this year’s recipients for their outstanding contribution.”
The awards recognise the work of individuals and organisations involved in grassroots football, from coaches and volunteers to those responsible for safeguarding, welfare and maintaining pitches.
