ONE PERSON has died and two further people are still undergoing treatment following a number of confirmed cases of Meningitis, the UK Health Security Agency has confirmed.
A student at Henley College, Henley-on-Thames has reportedly died and a single case of Meningitis B has been confirmed by the health authority.
While reports link the cases to nearby Reading, the exact nature of the link hasn’t been confirmed.
Despite this, the risk to the wider public has been described as low.
Students at the college are being encouraged to attend as usual, and those who have not been directly contacted by the UKHSA will not require any treatment.
However members of the public are being urged to refamiliarise themselves with the symptoms of Meningitis.
These include a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed with a glass; sudden fever; severe headache; vomiting and diarrhoea; joint and muscle pain, including a stiff neck’ cold extremities; confusion, delirium, and aversion to bright light; and sleepiness or difficulty being woken.
Young people are also being urged to check that they are up to date with vaccinations.
The University of Reading has confirmed that it has no reported cases among students.
