Students at The Abbey School in Reading are celebrating after almost nine in 10 GCSE grades were awarded at Grade 7 or above.

The girls achieved some of the school’s strongest results, with 40% of all grades awarded a Grade 9 and 67% at Grades 8 or 9.

Overall, 87% of grades were between 7 and 9, equivalent to A* and A grades under the old grading system.

The school said the results were achieved across 26 subjects, highlighting the breadth of its curriculum.

Mathematics was among the strongest-performing subjects, with 96% of students achieving Grades 7-9.

In Biology, 98% of students achieved Grades 7-9.

Two students also achieved 100% across all of their Mathematics papers.

One of them, Susie Lawrence, achieved a perfect score in Mathematics alongside Grade 9s in all 10 of her subjects and an A in Additional Maths.

“I was shocked and really happy,” she said.

Susie, who said Maths was one of her favourite subjects, will continue at The Abbey Sixth Form, where she plans to study Physics, German, Maths and Further Maths.

Yasmina Saunders achieved Grade 9s in all of her subjects and said she was “absolutely ecstatic” with her results.

“I put in so much work and I feel like it’s really, really paid off,” she said.

She will study Biology, Chemistry and Maths at The Abbey Sixth Form.

Aayushi Gupta achieved eight Grade 9s and two Grade 8s, while Sienna Grant also achieved eight Grade 9s and two Grade 8s.

Both students said they were relieved and excited by their results.

Aayushi will study Philosophy, Maths, Economics and History, while Sienna is taking Biology, Chemistry, Maths and an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Head of The Abbey, Dr Sarah Tullis, praised the students and staff for their achievements.

“We are so proud of our students and their superb results today,” she said.

“These wonderful grades come from the hard work and dedication of students and staff over two years.

“They are also testament to our all-girls environment and the academic stretch and support The Abbey provides.”

Dr Tullis said the school valued individual achievement and aimed to help pupils “flourish in and outside the classroom”.

She added that staff were looking forward to seeing students build on their GCSE results as they move into the Sixth Form and beyond.
