Reading resident Liam Moore has shared his experiences of working at a hospice after celebrating a decade at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice.
Liam began his time volunteering at the Reading-based hospice – and says the team make it the inspiring place it is to work.
He said: “In 2014 I started volunteering at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice as an admin and ward volunteer. After a few years of volunteering a vacancy came up at the hospice for a ward clerk and I jumped at the opportunity. I’d had such a wonderful experience volunteering that I knew it was the right role for me.
“I have worked in a lot of places during my career, and it is the people who make a place. At Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice the people are just amazing, everyone is so friendly and inspiring and that hasn’t changed over my ten years of working here.
“The past decade has really have flown by. I take on the admin tasks to save the nurses time on the ward so they can provide the best possible care to our patients. I take phone calls and handle the paperwork and do a variety of different things every day.
“The most rewarding memory I have has to be when we were caring for a woman whose last wish was to find out her son’s GCSE results. The results hadn’t been released yet but we were able to get those to her and to celebrate her son’s success before she died. That’s why Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent is so special, dying is such an important stage of someone’s life and we are here to help get that right.
“Working in a hospice isn’t what people would assume it would be like. The days are so varied and there’s a lot of laughter. It’s the best feeling knowing you are helping someone at a really important time of their life, as well as their families.”
