THE ROYAL Berks Charity and Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust were “delighted” to receive the Gold Award in the Wellbeing Garden category at this year’s Reading in Bloom awards.

The award recognises the outstanding Oasis Garden at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, a peaceful retreat designed to support the health and wellbeing of NHS staff.

The garden provides a calm, restorative space for colleagues to pause, reflect, and reconnect with nature during their busy working day.

The Oasis Garden is the result of a collaborative effort, from the initial concept, design, and first phase of delivery led by Chris Cox of Mulberry Tree Landscaping and Horticulture Ltd, and Dave Richards of Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC).

This carries through to completion in partnership with Food4Families, the Trust’s Estates Team and contractor Krinkels, along with a dedicated group of community and corporate volunteers who continue to nurture and maintain this special space.

The garden is also a hub for staff and community therapeutic gardening sessions, providing opportunities to engage with nature, learn about sustainable growing practices, and experience the wellbeing benefits of hands-on gardening.

“Those engaging in the sessions have also enjoyed learning to grow and harvest their own vegetables, developing skills that promote both personal wellbeing and a connection to sustainable living.

Dr Janet Lippett, Chief Medical Officer, Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Oasis Garden has become a much appreciated and well used sanctuary for our staff, offering a moment of calm in their busy day.

“It’s a space that reminds us how important it is to take time for our own wellbeing so we can continue to care for others. This recognition is a wonderful acknowledgment of what the garden means to our staff.”

Jo Warrior, Charity Director, Royal Berks Charity, added: “We’re incredibly proud to have been able to fund the creation of the Oasis Garden through the generosity of our supporters. A special thank you goes to Chris Cox and Dave Richards for their fantastic garden concept and design – their vision truly brought this wellbeing space to life.

“Winning this award is a testament to what can be achieved when our charity, staff, and local partners work together for the benefit of our hospital community.”
