Reading manager Ruben Selles has admitted that defender Nelson Abbey is close to sealing a departure from the club.
The 20-year-old defender turned down a move to Luton Town, but is subject to interest from Greek club Olympaicos, who have the same owner as Premier League Nottingham Forest.
Abbey was omitted from the matchday squad as the Royals lost to Wigan Athletic.
Speaking after the game, Selles said: “Everyone knows everything that has been going on with Nelson.
“He is finishing his decision and it has been a really tough week for him so we decided to give him the weekend off to make that final decision.
“Hopefully in the next week he will announce the future or the club will announce his future.”
When pressed on the matter, Selles was asked if he could announce that his future will be with Reading.
He replied: “No. I don’t want to disclose anything (which club), he is taking his time and didn’t come today for the game and we need to move forward.”
Reading have already lost defender Tom Holmes during this January transfer window to Luton Town, but he has rejoined the Royals on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Several more key first-team players have been linked with exits, with both Selles and head of football operations Mark Bowen determined to keep the squad intact.
Despite their financial situation and owner Dai Yongge currently trying to sell the club, Bowen reiterated that there would be ‘no fire sale’ in terms of the first-team squad.
