Fans of Reading FC have staged another in-game protest against their owners at Saturday’s EFL League One match versus Huddersfield Town.
The protest follows the collapse of the club’s takeover deal with Rob Couhig earlier this month. Today’s protest aims to continue to highlight the plight of the 152 year old club, whose future once again hangs in the balance down to the selfishness of owners Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li.
Supporters held up specially designed red cards with the message ‘Dai Family Sell the Club’ in English and Mandarin in the 18th minute to give Dai his marching orders. One of the aims of the protest is to help to build awareness of the club’s situation on Chinese social media. The campaign has been advised by experts on how best to get the message out on popular Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Members of the Sell Before We Dai campaign handed out Red Cards to supporters before kick-off – encouraging fans to join in the protest against Dai Yongge, whose financial mismanagement has cost Reading FC 18 points in the last three seasons, and whose recent actions led to the collapse of a takeover deal that would have ended months of worry about the future of the club.
Caroline Parker, Sell Before We Dai spokesperson, said: “It’s time for Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li to get out of our club, and sell it to someone who will invest wisely and drag us out of the mess they’ve created. We know that Dai and his sister don’t come to matches but we hope that this action will get noticed on Chinese social media, and put further pressure on them to sell the club.”
