A PROLIFIC shoplifter has been jailed for a string of thefts across West Berkshire.
Andrew Gainey, aged 38, of Kennet Road, Kintbury, pleaded guilty to eight counts of theft from a shop at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Monday, July 27.
He was sentenced to six months in prison at the same hearing.
The offences took place between 16 July and 24 July across Hungerford and Newbury.
On 16 July, Gainey entered One Stop in Hungerford on three separate occasions at approximately 6.26pm, 8.46pm and 9.12pm, stealing groceries each time. The following day, he entered Boots in Newbury and stole toothbrushes worth £144.95.
On 20 July, Gainey stole women’s razors worth £372 from Boots in Hungerford.
On 23 July, he entered B&M in Newbury and stole chocolate, sweets and cookies worth £7.94 before later stealing alcohol worth £78 from Waitrose in Newbury. The following day, he stole clothing worth £200 from JD Sports in Newbury.
Gainey was arrested and charged on Sunday, July 26.
Investigating officer PC Alasdair Ferrie, of the Newbury Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I am pleased that Andrew Gainey has received a custodial sentence for his offending across Newbury and Hungerford.
“Members of the public should not have to see a person such as Mr Gainey stealing from shops in broad daylight and being abusive towards retail staff.
“We hope this conviction demonstrates to the public our commitment to keeping our town centres safe for local people.”
