The longest-serving current MP for Reading has welcomed the millions of pounds the government has provided in disaster relief to Nepal.
The Himalayan nation and the neighbouring region of Tibet were hit with flash flooding and avalanches on Wednesday, August 26, which have tragically led to the deaths of 1,287 people.
Reading has a substantial Nepalese community due to Gurkha veterans settling in the town.
A vigil was held in Broad Street on Monday, August 31that was attended by members of the community and councillors.
Matt Rodda, the Labour MP for Reading Central, attended a meeting of fellow MPs in Parliament with the ambassador for a briefing on the assistance the government is providing.
He said: “It was important to attend the All Party Parliamentary Group for Nepal to show my support at this very difficult time and to discuss the rescue and relief effort.
“Nepal has always been there for Britain, and Britain needs to be there for Nepal.
“The UK has given £5 million of immediate aid, and Britain has a strong ongoing relationship as the second biggest donor to Nepal.
“There is incredibly close working between the British and Nepalese armed forces and civil servants.
“I would like to thank all those who are involved, including everyone in Reading who is supporting the appeal for help, particularly the team running the Greater Reading Nepalese Association appeal.”
So far, more than £10,000 has been raised, with a target of £25,000 being set.
