Two men remain in hospital after an assault in Reading that prompted a large police response in the town centre.

Officers were called to Castle Street at about 22:48 BST on Tuesday following reports of a fight.

A large police presence was seen in Reading after the incident, with officers remaining at the scene while investigations were carried out.

Thames Valley Police said both men suffered injuries in the assault and were taken to hospital, where they remain.

The force said two people have been arrested and officers do not believe there is any wider risk to the public.

Police have urged people to avoid the area while enquiries continue, although the cordon is expected to be lifted once investigations at the scene are complete.
