FROM THE LEADER: New children’s homes open in Reading

There are certain Council projects which are particularly pleasing to see successfully completed and, for me, the opening of three new children’s homes is one of those.

I have been very keen to see these homes up and running and welcoming children who are in our care – many returning to Reading from miles away.

The three homes are far removed from images some people may have of traditional institutional children’s homes.

These properties have been lovingly refurbished and redecorated to make them feel as much like a family home as possible, while also meeting Ofsted inspection requirements.

It can obviously be an unsettling time for children who come into the Council’s care and it is important that each child feels valued and cared for.

Unfortunately, there is not always suitable accommodation for children in Reading and they may have to live outside of the borough.

The opening of the Council’s three new homes will help reduce the number of children having to leave Reading and allow them to remain close to their school, friends, family and community, where it is appropriate.

Reading children often have a strong sense of belonging to the town and staying in the area they know can make a big difference to their sense of stability and connection.

Two of the Council properties are residential homes for a total of up to eight children, including two short term assessment places, and the other will care for up to two children with more complex needs.

Our staff at the homes will provide the specialist care and support each child and young person needs in a comfortable, friendly and welcoming environment.

The new children’s homes will also reduce the Council’s reliance on expensive private provision miles from Reading and have created more jobs for local people.

Of course, the new homes are only part of the solution. The Council is always keen to welcome more foster carers in Reading.

If you feel you could offer a child or young person a safe, loving, local home and would like to find out more, visit: https://www.readingfostering.co.uk/.
