A CELEBRATED food vendor in Reading is set to close, owners have announced.
Tutu’s Ethiopian Table is closing the hatch after nearly 20 years of bringing a taste of Africa to the borough.
Tutu’s has been a staple in Reading since it launched in 2006, forming a regular part of a number of events around town, including at East Reading Festival, Reading Climate Festival, numerous food festivals, and in its home in Palmer Park.
While the cafe itself will be closing, owner Tutu Melaku explained that the door would not be completely closing, explaining that the business would be present at events to share food and recipes “from time to time.”
In a statement posted to social media, business owner Tutu Melaku said: “After nearly 20 wonderful years of serving my community and people from far and wide, 31st October 2026 will be my final day at Tutu’s Ethiopian Table.
“This decision has not come easily–the café has been my life, my passion and in many ways, my home.
“But I believe every journey has its seasons, and I feel it is time to close this beautiful chapter and begin another one where I can slow down and spend more precious time with my granddaughter, making memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life.”
She explained: “I first opened my doors on 31st October 2006; at the time, I could never have imagined the incredible journey that lay ahead.
“It feels so meaningful that exactly 20 years later, on the very same date, I will hang up my apron–tt is the perfect milestone to celebrate all that we have shared together.
“From the very beginning, you welcomed me with open hearts. You trusted me to cook for your birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, festivals, community events, family gatherings, business meetings, and quiet evenings when all you wanted was a comforting takeaway.
“It has been one of the greatest honours of my life to prepare food that became part of your celebrations and cherished memories.”
She concluded: “Finally, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the United Kingdom. As an immigrant, this country gave me the opportunity to dream, to work hard, and to build a life I could only have hoped for. It welcomed me, believed in me, and allowed me to share my Ethiopian culture through food.
“A special thank you to Reading. What began as the place where I opened my café became my home.
“This community embraced me, supported me, and became my extended family. I will always be proud to call Reading home, and I will carry its kindness in my heart forever.
“One final request: if Tutu’s Ethiopian Table has ever been part of your life whether you joined us for a meal, celebrated a special occasion, stopped by for a coffee, or simply shared a moment with us I would love to hear your story.”
Tutu’s Ethiopian Table is open until October at its home in Palmer Park.
