READING FC are set to lose key first-team players in the January transfer window, with defenders Nelson Abbey and Tom Holmes both close to exits this month.
It is believed that Premier League side Luton Town are interested in signing the pair for a cut price due to Reading’s financial struggles.
As part of the negotiations, Reading are pursuing a move that could see Abbey return on loan for the remainder of the season.
Royals boss Ruben Selles admitted last week that he would be unable to prevent first-team players from leaving due to the club’s financial situation with talks of a takeover being stalled by current owner Dai Yongge.
Several clubs have been interested in pursuing a deal for 20-year-old centre-back Abbey who has impressed since breaking into the Royals first-team this season.
Abbey grabbed his chance at first-team football with some outstanding performances in the EFL Trophy which eventually led to Selles picking him as a regular in League One, with the player often trusted with the captain’s armband.
He has played a total of 26 matches in all competitions this season so far.
Holmes has recently battled his back into the first-team after being omitted from the squad for the first few months of the campaign.
He has managed to provide more stability at the back since his return in a run which has seen Reading go six league games unbeaten.
The 23-year-old has played a total of 117 matches in all competitions for the Royals.
