Reading FC manager Leam Richardson has claimed that the club has ‘improved in every department’ since he joined back in October.
Despite taking the Royals up the league table since taking over from Noel Hunt, Richardson’s side have had a disappointing collapse in recent weeks which has left their play-off hopes extremely improbable.
Speaking to Greatest Hits radio after a 3-1 loss to Cardiff City, who won promotion back to the Championship, Richardson was questioned about the criticism he has received from large sections of the fanbase regarding what have been perceived as negative performances.
He said: “I look at the positives and this is what we do and what I love. I’ve been here five months and we’ve improved in every department at the football club. We’ve improved on the pitch, we’ve improved results, we’ve improved performances, we’ve improved individuals like Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan getting player of the month.
“It’s my job to be optimistic and push forward. I don’t really go on fabricated social media and believe and read anything.
However, he also admitted that he was looking forward to the transfer window opening this summer and admitted: “This squad can be strengthened in a lot of areas.”
Fans have responded to his most recent comments. One said: “For me this is where Leam really falls down. The total lack of awareness and accountability is a big cause for concern. If he held his hands up and said it’s been sh*t, I’d be a lot less angry.”
Another added: The lack of awareness and accountability is astounding… yes position wise results and off pitch have improved, the performances on the pitch have been absolutely turgid and diabolical. A real chore to watch, he cannot have a summer here.”
