READING FC WOMEN’s manager Kelly Chambers was left ‘disappointed’ with her team’s first-half display in their defeat to Manchester United.
In their opening game of the new Women’s Super League campaign, the Royals found themselves 4-0 down at the break.
Despite an improved second-half showing, Reading were left with a heavy defeat in their opening match of the 2022/23 season.
“We didn’t turn up in the first-half how we should have,” said Chambers.
“It was disappointing to concede the goals we did, especially with the things we’ve been working on throughout pre-season.
“When we went one goal down, I thought the character in how we responded was good.
“We managed to get on the ball, exploit areas we had identified, which lead to the penalty call and for me the referee has to see it, or at the very least the officials have to help her.
“If it’s given, it creates a different game for us and we get a foot back into the game.”
However, the decision went against the Royals and they were to pay for some sloppy defending as United raced into a four goal lead to put the game beyond doubt before the break.
Chambers continued: “Looking at the goals we gave away, set pieces are so cheap.
“We did our work on them so we’ve got to get better in those moments.
“In open play, we didn’t concede too many clear cut chances, so it’s something to build on.
“I must give full credit to the girls for the way they conducted themselves in the second half.
“They took on board everything we gave them at half-time and out in a strong second-half performance with plenty of character and fight.”
Reading are back in action next Sunday when they face an away trip to Brighton & Hove Albion who were beaten 4-0 at Arsenal in their opening game.
