A SURVEY has revealed the UK’s most popular pancake toppings ahead of Shrove Tuesday.

The results, compiled using search engine data by online bakery Jack and Beyond, show that Nutella is the nation’s favourite addition.

Almost 4,000 searches for how to use the Italian hazelnut and chocolate spread with pancakes took place over the past 12 months.

For a twist on how to use Nutella, Jack and Beyond’s bakers recommend mixing it in to the batter to create a marbling effect.

“Or try adding a spoonful to the pancake batter once half is in the pan, and pour more of the mixture on top for a pancake which is bursting with chocolate,” one baker said.

Bacon takes second place in the poll, with 2,910 people looking for inspiration, followed by the more traditional topping of lemon and sugar with 2,890 searches.

Data has also revealed that an increasing number of Brits love using Marks and Spencer’s Percy Pig sweets on their pancakes.

The pig-shaped treats averaged 2,400 searches as a pancake addition every month last year.

This year pancake day falls on Tuesday, March 1.
