Reading’s aim this season must be to reach the League One play-offs, according to former loanee Jeff Hendrick.
The Royals have made an inconsistent start to the campaign, with Hendrick warning that their stop-start form could make it difficult to build momentum.
Hendrick, who spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Reading from Newcastle United, believes the club should be targeting a place in the top seven.
The midfielder made 45 appearances for the Royals and scored four goals, but the club suffered relegation from the Championship.
The 34-year-old has now given his thoughts on Reading’s hopes of trying to win promotion back to the Championship under manager Leam Richardson.
“That’s got to be the aim for Reading, the play-offs,” he said.
“They’ll be disappointed if they don’t get play-offs. Like you said, it’s a bit of a mixed bag at the moment, inconsistent.
“That’s one thing I always bang on about for any club, if you can be consistent and build momentum and confidence, you roll into matches without worrying too much.
“But if it’s stop-start where you’re winning, losing, and drawing, it’s really hard.
“So they need to find consistency and aim for those play-offs.”
The Royals host Notts County on Saturday as they seek to continue their improved run of form.
