Last Sunday brought plenty of drama across the women’s football pyramid, with local clubs in both the Southern Region Women’s Football League (SRWFL) and the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League (TVCWFL) battling hard for crucial early-season points.
It was a weekend of high drama and ultimate heartbreak for Woodley United Ladies as they took to the road to face Chesham United.
Following their season opener the prior week, the Kestrels were eager to establish some early momentum in the Premier Division.
Woodley put in a determined, resilient shift and looked on course to take something away from a fiercely contested match. However, Woodley was dealt a devastating blow when Chesham were awarded a late penalty. The resulting spot-kick was converted, handing the visitors an agonising 3-2 defeat. Despite the heartbreak, the squad can take plenty of confidence from their combative display.
Elsewhere in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division, Reading Women put on an absolute masterclass. Taking on Fleet Town at the SCL Stadium, the match turned into a goal-fest for the Royals, who completely dismantled their opponents in a resounding 7-2 victory. The emphatic scoreline sends a strong message to the rest of the division as they look to build on this phenomenal, free-scoring performance.
Down in SRWFL Division One North, it was an unforgettable weekend for the Finchampstead Ladies first team, who travelled away to face Kidlington.
In an absolute rollercoaster of a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats from the first whistle to the last, Finch edged out their hosts in a staggering nine-goal thriller to secure a remarkable 5-4 victory and a crucial three points on the road.
Down in the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League, the September fixtures are now in full swing.
In Division 1, Windsor & Eton Women put on a dominant display on Sunday afternoon as they hosted Caversham United Women. Aiming to lay down a marker in what promises to be a highly contested tier this year, Windsor & Eton found their clinical edge, securing a commanding 4-1 victory over their regional rivals to take all three points.
Also in Division 1, it proved to be a tough weekend for Ashridge Park Women as they hosted Barton United. Looking to make their mark on a very competitive division this season, Ashridge struggled to find their rhythm against a clinical visiting side and were ultimately handed a heavy 4-0 defeat at home. They will be looking to dust themselves off, regroup, and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
In Division 3 South, while the first team celebrated in the SRWFL, Finchampstead Ladies Reserves were involved in their own high-scoring barnstormer. Hosting Thatcham Town Kingfishers, the Reserves played their part in an eight-goal thriller but ultimately fell on the wrong side of a 5-3 defeat. Despite the loss, they will take positives from their clear attacking intent.
Also competing in Division 3 South, the Bracknell Cavaliers Valkyries went down 2-1 against Southall Athletic.
Meanwhile, Wokingham Town Ladies continued their own 2026 campaign in the same division. Having kicked off their league season earlier in the month, last Sunday saw Town step out once again, this time earning a composed 5-0 win against Maidenhead Nomads Development. On target for the Sumas were Lauren Nimmey with a hat-trick, Rebecca Greig and Tilly Baigent.
Adding to the busy Division 3 South schedule, Berks County Women were also in action on Sunday afternoon. They hit the road for an away clash against Brook House Women, coming away with a 1-5 win.
Elsewhere, Wargrave Women put in a highly commendable shift on Sunday, taking their chances well to secure a vital 2-1 victory and put early points on the board.
In their fixture, Berks United Ladies fought hard in a closely contested match that ultimately ended in a 0-0 draw with Marlow Development, while Shinfield Rangers Women were victorious 6-2 against Wraysbury Village.
FC Bracknell Women made their mark at the weekend, continuing to showcase the growing strength of grassroots football by demonstrating resilience and teamwork to grind out a well-earned 6-0 victory over Sandhurst Vets Warriors..
