Reading FC striker Jack Marriott has been awarded the League One goal of the month for August.
Reading’s star striker got his campaign off to a flying start with a stunning hat-trick in the opening game of the new season against Luton Town. Despite that, Reading went on to lose the game 4-3.
Marriott has picked up where he left off last season and has continued his superb scoring form. He is currently the top scorer in the division with six goals in five matches.
Having brought his team level, Marriott collected the ball on the halfway line and set off on a diagonal run before letting fly with a searing left-foot shot for the middle goal of his hat-trick.
Marriott said: “The way that the manager set us up against them, we knew that they wanted to play into the middle, so we were trying to get into a good structure to win it if they did try and force it between the lines. We managed to nick it, I drove up the pitch and looked for a pass, but it wasn’t on, their defence dropped and managed to get a shot off.
“I have felt at home ever since I joined, I absolutely love it. I am really enjoying it, with a great squad of players. I look forward to training every day and really enjoy coming into work. It is such a good place to be. Going out and playing in front of the fans, it doesn’t get any better and I am really enjoying it.”
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman said: “Jack Marriott probably couldn’t believe the space he found himself in as he drove towards Luton’s goal.
“He was given the room to shoot and he didn’t waste it, firing into the near post with pinpoint accuracy.”
Marriott beat off competition from Bromley’s Victor Adeboyejo, Stockport County’s Mikael Mandron and Mansfield Town’s Nathan Moriah-Welsh.
