THE ROTARY Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh is supporting both immediate emergency aid and long-term recovery work following the disaster in Nepal.
In August flash floods and debris struck dozens of settlements in Nepal near to the Trisuli River, causing more than 1,000 deaths and more than 5,000 missing persons in Nepal, with further deaths and casualties reported in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
The Reading Maiden Erleght Rotarians personally donated more than £2,000 towards relief efforts following the Nepal disaster, which, with Gift Aid increased to £2,500.
Together with a further £1,000 from the club’s charity account, the total amount to be donated rose to £3,500.
The club agreed to divide the donation between two organisations providing vital support at different stages of the emergency response and recovery effort.
£2,000 is going to ShelterBox (shelterbox.org), which is already on the ground in Kathmandu and working with local Rotary clubs to meet immediate needs, including emergency shelter and essential tools for people who have lost their homes.
And £1,500 is being donated to The Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland Recovery Trust Appeal.
This funding will be used by trustees for long-term regeneration projects and the rebuilding phase following the disaster.
Working in conjunction with local Rotary clubs, the appeal will support projects such as rebuilding schools, providing flood defences and restoring other vital community resources.
The Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh responded swiftly to support people affected by this devastating disaster and thanks everyone who has contributed to the appeal.
The club’s activities are aimed at serving communities both at home and abroad.
It meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Sonning Golf Club, for social events and fundraising activities to raise money for charities and good causes.
Since its formation in 1989 it has raised more than £450k for charity.
