A FESTIVE recycling scheme has raised £5,000 for charity.
At the start of January, 12 Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice volunteers collected 383 Christmas trees from people’s homes across Reading, Newbury and Wokingham.
The service raised thousands of pounds for families in need of compassionate care, as residents made donations for their trees to be collected, chipped into mulch and recycled.
In total, £5,248.50 was raised to help Sue Ryder continue to offer its care and bereavement support to families.
The charity worked worked in partnership with Just Helping, and were supported by G A Butler & Sons and Arborfield Tree Care.
Georgia Thornton from Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice, said: “Christmas Treecycling is a green and practical solution to the problem of what to do with a real tree once the festivities are over.
“We want to say a very special thank you to the community for supporting our scheme. This will help us to continue providing our expert care and filling families’ final days with love.”
Ms Thornton also thanked G A Butler & Sons and Arborfield Tree Care for donating their time.
Luke Butler, director – contract manager at G A Butler & Sons, said that he was delighted to partner with the charity.
“Not only have local residents supported a wonderful charity, but they have the added benefit of doing their bit for the environment too,” he said.
The charity is currently looking for residents to lace up their trainers and take on the Reading Half Marathon in April to support its work.
