READING FC are in talks with Ruben Selles to become the club’s new manager after negotiations with Chris Wilder have broken down.
The Royals did have a deal in place agreed with Wilder to become the new boss, but it is believed that the club wanted to change some terms, including changes to his backroom staff which led to a breakdown in negotiations.
It has been a turbulent time for the club who faced their latest charge from the EFL for multiple breaches of regulations.
The charges relate to the club failing to pay players’ wages on time and in full on three separate occasions.
In the midst of battling with financial complications, the Royals now continue their search for a new boss and have been without a first-team manager for more than two months since sacking Paul Ince.
It is believed that Reading have now set their sights on former Southampton boss Selles as the leading candidate to fill the managerial vacancy.
The 40-year manager has been in talks with the club since visiting the club’s training ground at Bearwood in recent days.
Selles was assistant manager at the Saints under Ralph Hasenhuttl from June 2022 before he took over the number one position on an interim basis after Nathan Jones was dismissed after a short spell.
After earning an impressive 1-0 away win at Chelsea to try and boost Southampton’s Premier League survival hopes, the Spaniard was appointed as the manager until the end of the season.
He was unable to help the Saints beat the drop and managed to win just two matches in his 17 in charge which saw Southampton finish bottom of the table on 25 points.
Southampton confirmed that they would not be extending Selles’ contract and are now looking to appoint a new manager as they prepare for Championship action next season.
