RECENT extreme weather events in the UK have sparked conversations about global warming, a topic that is being explored in a new short film headed by presenter and naturalist Chris Packham.
The Poachers Gastropub in Sindlesham will host a showing of this free documentary film, one of many similar events being rolled out across the country.
Called The People’s Emergency Briefing, the documentary is designed to ensure that UK residents are fully informed about the current climate and nature crisis.
Screenings of it form part of a growing UK-wide programme designed to help ensure that both the public and decision-makers are clearly and honestly informed about the climate and nature crisis – and what it may mean for communities across the country.
The People’s Emergency Briefing captures a Westminster meeting last autumn that gathered more than 1,200 MPs, peers and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media, to hear leading experts assess the UK’s exposure to climate and nature risks.
The briefing, which was introduced by Chris Packham CBE, set out the implications of climate and nature breakdown for food security, public health, infrastructure, the economy and national security, alongside evidence-based actions that could reduce these risks.
The eye-opening free documentary film event can soon be seen at The Poachers.
Its manager and staff are no strangers to one of the risks of extreme weather caused by climate change.
The pub is located on Mill Lane, which has been flooded many times after heavy rain, most recently in January.
Flooding there is likely to happen even more frequently with the stronger ‘El Nino’ effect later this year.
Nikhil Fernandes, manager of The Poachers, said: “Being near a flood plain means that Mill Lane is already prone to flooding, which can affect our business.
“Weather forecasters are warning us of especially wet and stormy conditions this autumn and winter because of the El Nino climate pattern, which global warming is supercharging.
“I am hoping that people who come to the People’s Emergency Briefing event here will learn more about extreme weather and how climate change is affecting us all.”
At every event, attendees are invited to take part in discussions about the issues raised, what they may mean locally, and how to support their MP to call for stronger action.
Local MPs and councillors have been invited to attend and take part in these important community events so they can appreciate their constituents’ concerns.
With more than 4,000 UK screenings registered (and rising) the film has already been seen in many venues across Berkshire, at meeting rooms, theatres, churches, village halls and cinemas.
The first local public house to host a screening event is The Poachers Gastropub in Mill Lane, Sindlesham.
The event will take place there, on Sunday, September 27, from 7pm until 9.30pm.
