Reading FC continue to face a battle to keep hold of midfielder Charlie Savage this summer, with several Championship clubs continuing to monitor the Welsh international following the opening of the transfer window.
Savage, 23, has emerged as one of Reading’s most influential players since joining from Manchester United in 2023 and is entering the final year of his contract at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Interest in the midfielder has been building for several transfer windows and is understood to remain strong among second-tier clubs.
Championship sides Oxford United, Norwich City and Portsmouth were all linked with Savage during the January transfer window, while Reading rejected approaches as they sought to keep hold of one of their key players.
More recently, newly-promoted Championship clubs Cardiff City and Lincoln City have been reported as potential suitors, with both clubs looking to strengthen ahead of the new season. Derby County have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder.
Savage made 43 League One appearances during the 2025/26 season, scoring two goals and providing five assists as Reading secured promotion back to the Championship. His performances have enhanced his reputation as one of the club’s most valuable assets.
Reading are now faced with a decision over the future of the Wales international. With just one year remaining on his contract, the club could seek to agree a new deal or consider offers this summer rather than risk losing him for no fee in 2027.
Any transfer would also be complicated by a significant sell-on clause believed to be held by Manchester United, Savage’s former club, which would reduce the amount Reading would receive from a sale.
The summer transfer window opened on 15 June and clubs across the Championship are expected to step up their recruitment plans in the coming weeks, with Savage likely to remain a player of interest throughout the window.
