READING College is inviting job seekers and adults who are looking to learn new skills to their Adult Education Open Event next week.

This friendly and informal open event will help attendees discover how Activate Learning can help them achieve their education and career goals.

Activate Learning offers opportunities for adult learners at every level, from confidence-building courses and career training to higher education pathways and creative learning experiences.

From employability support for finding that first job, advancing in a current career, returning to education, wanting to learn something new to looking for a completely fresh start, Activate Learning has opportunities available at every level.

The event aims to give the local community access to professional support and information when job hunting, retraining or returning to education.

The fair will be hosted at Reading College on Kings Road, where visitors can learn more about accredited courses, adult apprenticeships, help getting back into work, practical courses, higher education, and learning for leisure

Accredited courses including GCSEs, Access to Higher Education, AAT Accountancy and more, can support visitors returning to education, looking to upskill or hoping to increase their earning potential and fight the cost-of-living crisis.

For those looking to return to work, Activate Learning offers free training to build confidence through working with an employability coach.

They can support job seekers with the job search and interview skills, as well as essential job skills to build confidence, including functional English, maths, digital and ESOL (English as a second language).

Visitors can also learn more about adult leisure courses in Berkshire, offering a fun and relaxed environment, supporting mental wellbeing within the community, including pottery, painting, drawing, jewellery making, photography, textiles and more.

Practical courses help attendees develop real, job-ready skills, with hands-on training in areas including patisserie, sports massage, beauty therapy, hairdressing and barbering.

Attendees can also explore rewarding career opportunities at the college, from entry-level roles through to leadership positions, and find out about Activate Learning’s Access to HE programmes which offer adults who are 19 and over a chance to retrain and progress to university or higher education.

As part of the event, attendees can take part in a free hands-on printmaking taster session in our specialist workshop.

Led by experienced tutor Helena Tym, participants will create a one-colour lino print using simple and playful mark-making techniques before producing their own printed design to take away.

Caitlin McKenzie, 30, from Reading, completed an Introduction to Sewing class at Reading College and University Centre earlier this year.

She said: “I did an adult learning course because I wanted to learn something new!

“In school, I always had extra-curriculars on my weekly schedule, and I’ve missed that since entering the working world.

“I wanted to find something that would challenge me and inspire me at the same time, that wasn’t necessarily directly related to career development but rather fed my creative and playful side.

“Being able to attend a class in the evening suited my working pattern and gave me something fun to do on a weeknight.”

Reading College and University Centre’s Adult Open Event takes place on Tuesday, June 16, from 3.30-6pm .
