Each week, there are 10 great acts in our playlist, all with a connection to Reading or Wokingham. As always, we have a wide variety of musical styles, but we think they’re all worth a listen, and we hope you find something new to enjoy as well as maybe getting out to experience the thrill of live music. This week, we’ve got three new entries from acts who have a connection to the area.
1. The Dead Can Wait – Paranoia –
Reading-based The Dead Can Wait share their rhythm section with The Room, and their bass player is stage manager and MC for Wokingham Festival, so there should not be too many surprises for them when they headline on the Marquee stage on Monday August 25th. This is their second single, from their very-well-received debut album, In Lumine. They have a Classic Rock sound, but with a modern sensibility. https://thedeadcanwait.band/
2. Neon Fields – Aftermath –
Bristol-based Neon Fields formed in 2020, just in time for Covid lockdowns to take effect; they put the time to good use, however, working on songs that formed the basis of their first album, the eponymous Neon Fields which got great reviews. Since then they’ve been performing live and have now issued this epic new single. We’re looking forward to seeing them open the proceedings on the main stage at Wokingham Festival on Monday 25th August, the Prog and Classic Rock themed day. https:// www.facebook.com/neonfieldsband
3. doops – everything’s fine –
Reading-based trio doops are back with another excellent single, this time looking at the realities of life, where sometimes “fine” is plenty good enough. The track comes after they’ve had an active opening to the year with a string of live dates, and this is the first release on their DIY imprint, Hot Earth Records. The track started as an instrumental with occasional member Cameron Smith (a busy chap, as he’s one half of the creative partnership that is Puma Theory, and we recently saw him playing with The Jacques in Reading), and then just grew. https://www.facebook.com/doopsband
4. Martha and the Fairy – You’re What I Want to Be –
Martha and the Fairy is a singer-songwriter from London, and recently visited Reading to play at the Oakford Social Club as part of bill to celebrate local music presenter and promoter Alex West’s birthday (the same line-up that included The Jacques, featured in this playlist, and Deva St John, another RaW Sounds Today favourite). This is her latest single, a poppy number about being dissatisfied with who you are. https://www.instagram.com/martha_andthefairy/
5. Iain Hornal – Over and Out –
We featured Iain Hornal last year with his band Big Horizon, after he played at the Hexagon with 10cc. Iain was born and raised in the area, before going on to great things as a musician, playing stadiums worldwide with 10cc and ELO, among others. He’s just a released a new solo album, Return to the Magic Kingdom, and this is the second single from it, about the end of a relationship. https://www.iainhornal.com/
6. The Stretch – Buried in the Sand –
The Stretch are a real Reading band, formed at Reading University and playing in the area at various venues. This is their latest single, about first impressions and last goodbyes, maybe a meditation on what’s next after Uni. They’re not going away yet, though, you’ll be able to see them perform on the Marquee stage at Wokingham Festival on Sunday 24th August! https://

7. Billy Idol – Still Dancing –
Time for another RaW Sounds Today road trip! This time we were privileged to go to Wembley to see Billy Idol kicking off his multi-country tour to tie in with his latest album, Dream Into It. The show was every bit as spectacular as you would expect, and kicked off with this single, Still Dancing, the title of which calls back his hit Dancing With Myself. It manages the trick of being fresh and at the same time sounding like classic Billy Idol. The album is a great collection of tracks with an autobiographical slant as he looks back on his career. https://billyidol.net/
8. David Essex – Rock On –
Going back in time even further than Billy Idol’s debut, a bit of real nostalgia for those as old as the curators of this playlist! This track from, and written by, David Essex, from 1973, still sounds great over fifty years on.It was his big hit in the US, and just the start of his chart career in the UK, where he notched up 19 top 40 hits. You can see the man himself when he appears at Englefield House on July 20th on a bill headlined by the Beach Boys and also featuring Lulu! https://www.davidessex.com/
9. West Street – Eden –
From two well-established performers to an up-and-coming young band. West Street were still all at school when they released their debut single last year, and then played in a number of venues around London followed by a great performance on the main stage at last year’s Wokingham Festival. 10. Jake Bugg – I Wrote the Book –
You may have seen the feature on Jake Bugg in the paper recently, ahead of his appearance at The Hexagon, the start of his live dates for this year. He put on a great show, opening with some solo acoustic songs followed by a full band set, in front of a packed auditorium of appreciative fans. This is his latest single, with sound advice for life for everyone, seize the day! https://
