A READING musician has been working on a special event to raise funds for a charity close to his heart.

A day-long festival, Chameleon’s Music, promises listeners an exciting lineup of experimental, alternative, and indie sounds.

The event will take place in Reading town centre’s indie music venue and bar, the Purple Turtle.

Simon Oliver, who lives with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), has put Chameleon’s Music together to raise funds for Berkshire MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Therapy Centre (BMSTC).

Situated off Reading’s Oxford Road, the MS centre provides a range of specialist therapies (including physiotherapy, oxygen therapy, and counselling) and support for people living with the condition, and their families,.

In November last year it was awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local volunteer groups in the UK, equivalent to an MBE.

With no NHS funding, BMSTC relies on the public to keep its services running.

Chameleon festival tickets will support the charity while enabling music lovers to enjoy the sounds of:

  • MY LIBERAL PONY – Experimental freak pop

  • Hööf – sweet ‘n’ sour indie guitar pop from Oxford

  • Sundaughter – mercurial shoegaze from Reading

  • Doops – Spacey alt. Punk from Berkshire

  • Puma Theory – alternative rock from Brighton / Berkshire

  • Lots Of – tense, angular guitar music based in London

  • Baby Maker – wonky proto-punk into moody, low-slung grooves from Oxford

MS affects the nerves, causing symptoms such as muscle weakness, pain, and fatigue.

It is unpredictable and there is no cure.

“I’ve lived with Relapsing-Remitting MS for nearly 10 years now,” Simon said.

“But I’ve been pouring my energy into organizing a day festival fundraiser at Purple Turtle while managing my own MS and difficult personal challenges.

“It’s a huge personal milestone, and I would love to be able to make a significant impact for the community that has been able to support me.”

The event will take place at Purple Turtle, Gun Street, Reading, on Sunday, May 31.

Doors open at 2.30pm, with music from 3pm until 10pm.

Tickets cost £10 plus £1 booking fee online, or £12 on the door (subject to availability).

The venue is wheelchair accessible, with accessible toilet facilities.

ID will be required.
