Thames Valley Police is encouraging residents to view their homes “through the eyes of a burglar” as part of a crime prevention campaign aimed at reducing residential burglaries.
The force has issued a series of security tips, urging householders to identify and address vulnerabilities that could make their homes an attractive target for criminals.
Officers say burglars are often looking for unlocked doors and windows, poor lighting, hidden access points and valuables left on display, including car keys, handbags, laptops and jewellery.
Residents are also being advised to keep hedges and shrubs well maintained to reduce hiding places, ensure locks are secure and in good condition, and avoid advertising holidays on social media or leaving post to pile up, which can signal that a property is empty.
The advice extends to vehicle security, with motorists urged to lock their cars, remove valuables from view and, where possible, park in well-lit areas covered by CCTV.
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “To reduce residential burglary we are encouraging the public to view their homes through the eyes of a burglar and take steps to improve home and vehicle security.”
The force is also asking residents to report suspicious people or vehicles in their neighbourhood. Anyone witnessing a crime in progress or requiring an immediate police response should call 999, while non-emergency incidents can be reported by calling 101.
