The pain of parting …

so much harder …

for the ones

Who aren’t leaving …

Left to linger …

In their grieving.

See the fixed smiles of farewell

And the “God be with you” waves

In the faces and hands

who’ve raised US, to be brave.

As we take those steps,

And board the ship

To the Northern Hemisphere:

A very foreign future …

What is there to fear?

Perhaps the cold ache of racism,

That seeps through flesh into bones,

And leaves our hearts longing

For the faces, for the places

That we’ve always known.
