PLANS to convert a former Whitley pub into a food store have taken a step forward.

Turkish Halal Food Centre Express wants to open in The Wellington Arms on Whitley Street. It was previously a Greggs bakery between 2018 and February.

Building owner Sykes Capital has applied to Reading Borough Council for a change in the operating hours for the shop unit on behalf of the food business.

This would see the site be able to trade from 6am to 11pm each day, instead of the current 6am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

The application can be seen by logging on to Reading Borough Council’s planning website, searching for reference 240288.
