Government agency submits planning application for new weather centre headquarters

THE Government Property Agency has submitted a planning application to Wokingham Borough Council for a new, state-of-the-art meteorological facility.

The proposals would see the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts headquarters, which is currently based in Shinfield Park, move to the University of Reading’s Whiteknights campus.

Set to be located next to the University’s Department of Meteorology, the new building will create the largest cluster of weather and climate research and operational forecasting facilities in the world.

In its planning statement, the ECMWF said that its current site does not provide an adequate solution for its long-term needs. It cited the site’s “ageing structure, costs involved and ensuing disruption to the Centre’s mission” as key reasons behind the move.

A consultation period ran from October 9-30.

Clive Anderson, Director of Capital Projects, said: “The GPA is delighted to have submitted the planning application for this new state-of-the-art project.

The ECMWF and the University have enjoyed a longstanding relationship, with scientists working together for decades on cutting-edge science, including weather and climate simulations, and training programmes for early career researchers.

Funded by the UK Government through the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the new headquarters will also be designed to industry-leading net zero carbon standards.

The project will bring new opportunities and attract long-term investment to the region.
