HERITAGE Open Days is set to explore the vivid history of one of Reading’s most iconic venues this week.
The Rising Sun Arts Centre is opening its doors for a tour for the Temperance Tavern event, featuring an an exhibition of Victorian and Edwardian magic lantern projectors, demonstrations of hand-painted lantern slides, and sampling of historical temperance drink alternatives.
It will also host short talks detailing the site’s history and its current role as a community arts venue, alongside readings reflecting local Victorian history.
The Grade II listed building was built in 1877, as designed by Alfred Waterhouse, and used as a Temperence Tavern– a type of public house which avoided alcoholic drinks amid the temperance movement.
Heritage Open Days 2026: Reading Temperance Tavern takes place at the Rising Sun Arts Centre on Sunday, 13 September from 10am-5pm.
