Last Thursday, I held a listening event for constituents in advance of the debate on assisted dying that is taking place this coming Friday. This is hugely complex and emotive topic and, in addition to the event on Thursday, I have received many representations by email, by post, and at surgeries. I am extremely grateful for the thoughtful and respectful way the discussion on Thursday was conducted and for the stories and experiences that residents have shared, and I am considering them all as I decide on my vote.
I was delighted that last week the Home Secretary announced tough new powers to clamp down on anti-social behaviour – delivering on the promise in our manifesto. New Respect Orders will give the police stronger powers to seize vehicles and to deal with the scourge of off-road bikes, dangerous e-scooters, and in tackling car meets. Alongside thousands more neighbourhood police officers and PCSOs, these new powers will help deliver on our mission to take back our streets for our communities.
This week, we’ve launched our plan to get Britain back to work and grow our economy. We will transform Jobcentres so they work for local people and businesses, make sure all 18-21 year olds are earning or learning through a new Youth Guarantee, and by providing new back-to-work support to tackle economic inactivity.
I’m committed to ensuring that all pensioners who are eligible for Pension Credit apply for it in time to receive this year’s Winter Fuel Payment. That’s why, alongside Citizen’s Advice and Age UK, I am holding a surgery in Tilehurst on Thursday 5 December to support people in working out if they are eligible for Pension Credit and to offer help applying. There is no doubt that after years of missed targets, we are facing a housing crisis that can only be addressed by building and I’ll make no apologies for advocating for the affordable homes and infrastructure local families deserve.
But I remain very concerned by West Berkshire Council’s bodged local plan process. I am particularly disappointed to see proposals for development on Pincents Hill against residents’ views and on what has consistently been shown to be an unsuitable site and a much loved green space.
The council will vote on the plan this week and there will then be a period of consultation. I would urge residents to respond to the consultation.
