FROM THE LEADER: Foster carers are truly extraordinary

Foster carers are truly extraordinary. Not a particularly revolutionary opinion, but I think it’s important to celebrate those who transform the lives of children in Reading. Ahead of Foster Care Fortnight in May, there’s no better time to highlight the amazing work our foster carers do and maybe to think about if it’s something that could suit you or someone you might know?

In Reading, we have more than 250 children and young people in our care and we are always looking for more foster carers so that we can keep them close to their families, friends, school and communities, which is really important for their stability.

We have foster carers from all walks of life, all offering a stable, secure and supportive environment for someone who just wants to belong in a family. They need someone they can trust and believe in, and this can be a child’s first positive experience of family life.

Often people will immediately discount the idea of becoming a foster carer, but many don’t realise the different types of care needed. Can’t commit to long-term fostering? Maybe respite care is for you, providing a few days’ care to give the child’s family a short break. Perhaps you’d prefer something in the middle? We’re always looking for carers for regular stays of anything from a few days, weeks, months or occasionally over a year.

There isn’t a long list of criteria you need to meet to become a foster carer. If you live in or near Reading, have at least one spare room in your home and you are able to give time to a child or young person, you could be perfect for the role.

Perhaps your own children have left the nest, or maybe you want children but would prefer to help someone without a family of their own. Your age, gender, sexuality, relationship status, wealth or job do not matter, it’s the person you are that we’re interested in.
