A FREE public event at Langley Mead nature reserve will mark National Meadows Day in Shinfield on Saturday, July 4, with a new guided walk taking in the wider green spaces at School Green and Shinfield Ridge.
National Meadows Day is an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the vital role meadows play in supporting biodiversity, providing habitats for wildlife, and enhancing the natural landscape.
Members of the local community, and beyond, are invited to learn more about the restoration of Langley Mead, which is owned and managed by the University of Reading, to a traditional floodplain meadow.
Visitors will also get the chance to learn more about the wide range of plants and wildlife that can be found on the nature reserve.
Visitors to the National Meadows Day event will have the chance to join a series of guided walks throughout the day, suitable for all ages.
These will leave from the stall at the Arborfield Road car park.
Further information and self-guided walks of the open green space will also be available from the stall, along with wildlife spotter sheets for keen-eyed participants.
Molli Cleaver, Community Engagement Manager at the University of Reading, said: “National Meadows Day is a great chance for the community to explore Langley Mead and see the work we’re doing to support wildlife along the River Loddon.
“This year we’re adding a new walk linking Langley Mead with the wider green spaces at School Green and Shinfield Ridge, so visitors can see how these areas work together to support local wildlife. We look forward to welcoming everyone along for a day of walks and talks.”
Guided walks take place at 11am for the School Green, Shinfield Ridge, and Shinfield Meadow SANGS Walk (approx. 1 hour); and at noon for the Langley Mead: Past, Present and Future (approx. 1 hour).
The event is free to attend and open to all, taking place on Saturday, July 4, 11am-4pm.
