A serial shoplifter has been jailed and banned from entering Tesco, Co-op and BP stores across Berkshire after stealing around £3,500 worth of goods.

Luke Sampson, 33, of Foxhays Road, Whitley, was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard Sampson committed 28 thefts from a number of shops between April and last week, with the value of the stolen goods estimated at about £3,500.

As well as the custodial sentence, magistrates imposed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which will take effect upon his release from prison.

The order bans Sampson from entering any Co-op, Tesco or BP store in Berkshire. He is also prohibited from wearing face coverings or hoods while inside shops in the county and must leave any store immediately if asked to do so by a member of staff.

Police said the offences had a direct impact on retail workers and customers, with the order designed to help protect businesses from further offending.

A Criminal Behaviour Order is intended to prevent offenders from engaging in behaviour linked to their previous crimes, with breaching the order itself constituting a criminal offence.
