A search is on for a manager to run a post office in Caversham following a recent closure.

A post office has been situated at the Co-op in Henley Road for years to provide postage services to customers.

This includes sending letters and packages, collections and everyday banking services.

However, the post office closed recently following the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the Co-op for Post Office use.

Rumours about the closure first surfaced last December.

Although a six-week public consultation was held, the closure went ahead.

A spokesperson said: “Henley Road Post Office in Caversham regrettably closed on Saturday, August 2 due to the resignation of the operator and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.”

The Post Office is now searching for a new operator and premises to serve customers in the area.

Matt Rodda, the Labour MP for Reading Central, has had a meeting with the Post Office and is working with the organisation to try to find another retailer which can provide a home for the sub post office.

He said: “Post offices provide a vital local service, and it is very important for residents to have access to a post office close to where they live.

“I am calling on Post Office managers to work with local retailers to find another shop where a sub post office could serve residents in the Henley Road area.”

An advert for a new postmaster is currently live. The closing date for applications is Thursday, October 9.

The advert may close early if sufficient interest is registered.

The organisation is looking for a successful retailer to incorporate a Post Office Local into their existing or proposed business.

Fees to run the postal service range from £22,050 to £24,500 per annum.

The advert states that the successful applicant will have superb customer service and focus, strong conversational skills to actively listen to and respond to customers’ needs, and will have the ability to hire and train great team members for the branch.

Mr Rodda said: “I was pleased to hear that the Post Office recognises the concern of local residents and that it is actively seeking new partners in the immediate area to host a new Post Office Local branch.”

Post offices in the area include the Caversham Post Office at 47 Hemdean Road, the post office at 163-165 Caversham Road, Reading, and the Conisboro Local store in Caversham Heights.

People on the Caversham Gossip Facebook community page previously complained that opening hours had diminished.
