Reading restaurant Manzano’s and local charity Sadaka opened its arms to the homeless and those in need on Christmas Day, in a powerful display of community and festivity.
The restaurant, which first landed on Oxford Road in September 2017, served a hot chicken meal, dessert and teas and coffees throughout the afternoon.
Sadaka, which has been running since January 2017, is a non-profit organisation who support people facing financial hardship, homelessness, or social isolation. Their ethos is rooted in giving without judgement or bias, so Christmas Day was a perfect time to team up with a local business and offer more.
The initiative proved to be a resounding success, welcoming around 50 people who were treated to a safe, welcoming and warm environment during a time of year that can be especially difficult for those without stable housing.
Gift packs, with essential female sanitary products were gifted to women in attendance, courtesy of Project Salama, an organisation who support individuals to live a life free from abuse.
Manzano’s owner Asam Aziz said his faith was a driving force in promoting the festive feast initiative.
He said: “You may ask why we are doing this. In our faith, feeding people is a big deal.
“The prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, said the best of you are those who feed others.
“With austerity at an all-time high and many families struggling just to get by, we felt it was important to create a space where everyone is welcome — regardless of race, background or religion.
“In a time where negative attitudes towards Muslims and immigrants are increasingly visible, this initiative is also about breaking down barriers and reminding people of our shared humanity.”
Sadaka trustee Shazia Fazal said: “Christmas is a time when hardship feels heavier for many of the people we support.
“At Sadaka, our mission has always been to give without judgement and seeing the community come together today reminds us why that matters. A warm meal, a friendly conversation, a moment of dignity — these things can make all the difference.
“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this day special for those who needed it most.”
