Reading forward Sean Patton has signed a new two-year contract with the club, keeping him at the Select Car Leasing Stadium until summer 2028.

The 20-year-old joined Reading from Derry City last summer and progressed from the Under-21s into the first team.

Patton made eight appearances for the club last season, scoring once before an injury disrupted his progress.

He also enjoyed a successful loan spell at National League side Aldershot Town, scoring five goals in six appearances.

His form earned him international recognition and he made his Republic of Ireland Under-21 debut in March.

Patton is now nearing a return to first-team action after suffering an injury during pre-season.

Reading manager Leam Richardson said the forward had shown a “great attitude” during his recovery.

“We’re really pleased to get Sean tied down,” Richardson said.

“He’s a talented young player with a lot of potential, but just as importantly he’s got a great attitude and a real desire to keep improving.

“He contributed to the first team last season and then had an excellent loan spell at Aldershot under John Coleman, which was another really important step in his development and gave him valuable experience of playing regular senior football.

“The injury he picked up in pre-season has been a bump in the road, but his application and attitude throughout his recovery have been excellent.”

Richardson added: “There’s plenty more to come from Sean. He’s hungry to develop, work hard and earn his opportunities, and we’re looking forward to seeing him continue that progression.”

Patton’s new contract keeps him at Reading through to the end of the 2027-28 season.
