PROTESTORS in Reading marched through the town on Saturday as part of a rally calling for major changes and government action.
Reading Trades Union Council and Reading Resists organised the protests to make six key demands in the face of rising costs, food and energy poverty, and climate change.
Protestors assembled in Forbury Gardens at 2.30pm on Saturday, February 18, before marching to The Butler for a rally.
Among those addressing crowds was Fran Heathcote, president of the Public and Commercial Services Union.
The protest had six main demands: an end to food poverty, a “real” pay rise for workers, a “major” cut in energy bills, an end to “climate chaos,” higher taxes for the rich, and “decent” homes for all.
The protest was followed by live performances at The Butler, including from Hard Times, The Highwasters, and Attila The Stockbroker.
Nikki Dancey, President of RTUC said: “The public services that we rely on are being run into the ground. Rents are rocketing and energy prices are through the roof.
“More and more rely on food banks– we need major government action now to stop the 99% falling further and further behind and to ensure that planet earth is still habitable for generations to come.”
