Labour’s Reading West and Mid Berks MP has criticised the new Prime Minister’s decision to let two of PC Harper’s killers out on early release from prison, pledging to challenge the decision.
“Harper’s killers should not be eligible for early release, and I am deeply disappointed that the government have not exempted them from the early release scheme following their review,” she said.
“I will continue to do whatever I can to challenge this decision.”
Two of PC Andrew Harper’s killers will be released from prison early under plans approved by Andy Burnham.
Despite a review commissioned by the PM, Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole could be freed by the end of the year after serving just six-and-a-half years.
PC Harper died after being dragged along a road by a quad bike in Sulhampstead in 2019.
Henry Long, from College Piece, Mortimer, the driver of the vehicle, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He won’t be released under the scheme.
“The killing of a police officer or any emergency worker in the line of duty is among the most heinous crimes that can be committed,” said Ms Bailey.
“Following a tireless campaign by PC Harper’s family, Harper’s Law rightly reflects this.
“PC Harper was the very best of us, and his family have immense courage in the face of utter tragedy.
“I stand with them and with all our brave and hard working police in the Thames Valley.”
Earlier, both the Thames Valley Police chief constable Jason Hogg and the Thames Valley crime commissioner Matthew Barber said they would challenge the decision.
