With winter fast approaching, residents of Reading and across the UK are bracing for another surge in energy costs. The recent announcement by Ofgem to raise the energy price cap by 9.5% is a major concern for many, particularly those already struggling to manage their bills.

This latest price hike is a stark reminder that consumers are being forced to bear the brunt of a crisis they did not cause. Many households will find this news deeply worrying as they try to make ends meet during the colder months.

While the government has promised that the creation of GB Energy will eventually lead to lower bills, this outcome is far from guaranteed unless accompanied by significant investments in energy efficiency. Improving the energy efficiency of homes is crucial to reducing energy costs in the long term.

The Green Party is calling for an urgent nationwide programme of home insulation, which should be government-backed but delivered by local councils to ensure it addresses the specific needs of our communities. Proper insulation is the key to keeping homes warm, cutting down on energy use, and reducing bills permanently, all while lowering carbon emissions.

Greens lobbying to maintain winter fuel payments

The four newly elected Green Party MPs are urging the government to maintain winter fuel payments for all pensioners and to remove the current means testing. Pensioners deserve the peace of mind that they can afford to stay warm without worrying about the cost.

By investing in energy-efficient homes, boosting insulation, and building new houses designed to be cheaper and easier to heat, we can address the underlying causes of high energy bills. This isn’t just about surviving this winter—it’s about creating a future where everyone can afford to keep warm without harming the environment.

The Green Party is committed to pushing for these necessary changes both here in Reading and on a national level. Now is the time for action. Let’s work together to ensure a warmer, greener, and more affordable future for all.

Greens are the second largest party in Reading

As the main opposition party on Labour-run Reading Council Green councillors will continue to work constructively to get the best for Reading residents. There are now eight Green Party councillors and we are now four councillors ahead of the Conservatives. We will keep working hard all year round on the issues that matter to residents.

If you’re keen on being part of the change in Reading, get involved and help us make Reading fairer, greener and cleaner.
