ELEVEN academics from the University of Reading have been selected to serve as experts on panels for the Research Excellence Framework’s next country-wide funding assessment.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for evaluating research quality across higher education institutions, with its findings determining the distribution of approximately £2 billion in annual public research funding.

It aims to provide accountability for public investment in academic research and provide evidence for the benefits of the research.

The next round of scrutiny is set to take place in 2029, for which a group of experts have been appointed for each of the process’ 34 areas of focus.

Among the 11 selected from the University of Reading are Professor Carol Wagstaff, who has been appointed sub-panel deputy chair for Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Science, alongside Professor Dimitris Charalampopoulos and Dr Tetyana Korin, who will serve as sub-panel members in the same field.

Also selected were Professor Benjamin Laker, for Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care; Professor Deepa Senapathi for Biological Sciences; Professor Mary Lewis for Archaeology, and both Dr Florence Phua and Professor Gavin Parker for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning.

Elsewhere, Professor Uma Kambhampati was selected for Anthropology and Development Studies; Professor Gail Marshall for English Language and Literature, and Professor Gerry Leonidas for Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory.

Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research & Innovation, said: “Having eleven of our academics selected for REF2029 panels is a testament to the University of Reading’s world-leading expertise across multiple research disciplines.

“These appointments reflect the breadth and quality of our expertise, from arts, science, social science and business.

“Our experts will bring decades of research excellence to help shape the future of UK higher education funding.”
