Organisers of the Woodley Community Carnival have apologised after anti-social behaviour and violence involving a group of young people disrupted this year’s event.
The annual carnival, which attracts thousands of visitors to Woodford Park, was marred by an incident on Saturday evening that prompted a significant police response.
In a statement issued after the event, organisers said they were “appalled” by what had taken place and condemned all forms of violence and anti-social behaviour. They stressed that the actions of a small number of individuals did not reflect the spirit of the carnival or the wider community.
The disorder occurred at around 6.40pm, with officers responding to reports involving a group of teenagers. Thames Valley Police later launched an appeal for witnesses as enquiries continued. Footage shared online showed a large police presence in the area, with officers using dispersal powers to prevent further disorder.
Carnival organisers said the event had otherwise been a success, bringing together local residents, community groups and performers for a day of family entertainment.
They thanked volunteers, stallholders, sponsors and visitors who helped make the event possible, while expressing regret that the behaviour of a minority had detracted from the occasion.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who has relevant footage to come forward as investigations continue.
