MUSIC from country music queen Dolly Parton, and a story of three women pushed to their limits by their sexist and egotistical boss
– this is 9 to 5 The Musical, a show that originally appeared as a film in 1980, when it grossed more than a million dollars at the box office.
Presented this month by members of the Sainsbury Singers, the stage musical will hit Bracknell, where it promises to delight audiences.
Director Cath Hannan said: “Audiences are in for a treat.
“Packed full of fun, friendship, solidarity, revenge, power and empowerment, it’s a high energy show with lots of great dance numbers, brilliant characters and of course the iconic music of Dolly Parton.”
As the story unfolds, the trio of women devise a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor.
Will they manage to reform their office – or will events unravel when the CEO pays an unexpected visit?
Asked why it appealed to her as a director, Cath said: “Who wouldn’t want to direct a revenge fantasy for women who feel overworked, underpaid and disrespected?
“I think women everywhere will be able to relate to the growth of Judy’s character, the strength and determination of Violet and the hardships that Doralee has had to face, and the friendship that then grows and binds them together.”
Usually performing at The Hexagon in Reading, this is the first time the Sainsbury Singers will take to the Wilde Theatre stage, and they look forward to welcoming both regular and new audience members alike.
Musical Director Julie Dance said: “I am really enjoying working with The Sainsbury Singers.
“They pick up the vocal parts so quickly and work hard between rehearsals too, so it’s a dream for me as the MD.
“The score is an absolute treat with some brilliant arrangements for the ensemble.
“Put together this creates a really exciting sound.”
The Sainsbury Singers are an amateur musical theatre society based in Reading, dedicated to providing quality entertainment for the local community and beyond.
Established in 1938 by Frank Sainsbury, previous productions range from the operetta of Gilbert & Sullivan and Offenbach, to classic musical theatre such as Oklahama! and My Fair Lady, right through to modern productions such as Jekyll and Hyde.
Performances of 9 to 5 The Musical can be seen at Bracknell South Hill Park Arts Centre’s Wilde Theatre, from Wednesday, October 30 through to Saturday, November 2.
Doors open at 7.45pm, with an additional Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
