READING is once again to be set aglow as Diwali celebrations return later this month.
Thousands are expected to take part in one of the largest such events in the South East marking the annual Hindu, Jain, and Sikh festival.
Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, and sees observers illuminating their homes with lanterns, candles, and oil lamps, as well as fireworks, parades, and various feasts.
This year Kala the Arts is once again bringing its own celebrations to Reading, including its staple lantern parade.
Global Grooves will return with their 19ft tall illuminated puppets, as well as a whole host of other hand-operated marionette works, alongside classical and folk dances such as Bharatanatyam, Bhangra, Odissi, and Sambalpuri.
The parade will also see more than 150 lanterns and 100 lotus flowers carried by student participants.
The event also welcomes the Bollywood Brass Band, Dhol drummers, and other live musicians.
Reading’s Diwali Parade takes place on Saturday, October 24, gathering at the Town Hall Square from 4.30pm.
Performances befin at 5pm, before the parade departs at 6.15pm, and through Broad Street.Attendance is free, and no booking is required.
