The slip roads to enter a major road in Berkshire have been branded ‘some of the most dangerous in England’.
Olivia Bailey, the Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, has been campaigning to improve safety measures for the slip roads for the A34 at East Ilsley and Beedon.
She has called the slip roads ‘some of the most dangerous in England’ during a speech in the House of Commons to introduce a Ten Minute Rule Bill on the issue and urging the government to take action.
Mrs Bailey highlighted several case studies from neighbours and called on the government to provide for a comprehensive review of the safety of the dangerous slip roads and ensure that the necessary improvements are made as soon as possible.
Her bill received cross-party support, being sponsored by Lee Dillon, the Liberal Democrat MP for Newbury and Olly Glover, the Liberal Democrat MP for Didcot and Wantage.
Mrs Bailey said: “I was proud to speak in the House of Commons chamber to present my Bill on these dangerous A34 slip roads and bring the government’s attention to the need for action.
“I am grateful to all those who shared their stories with me, and I will now work closely with the Department for Transport and National Highways, continuing my campaign for a full safety review and urgent improvements to make these roads safe for my constituents.”
The bill was introduced on Tuesday, May 13.
Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood listened to the speech, and Mrs Bailey will continue to engage with the Department for Transport to progress the measures called for.
This includes the delivery of the A34 Improvements North & South of Oxford Study – which National Highways have recommended.
