A READING MP has encouraged residents to take part in a review into anti-social use of fireworks.
Olivia Bailey, Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, has welcomed a new review into the use of fireworks, which she says has caused distress, disruption to people’s working lives, and “terrified” pets and children.
It comes after Ms Bailey lobbied government colleagues for action to address residents’ concerns.
An open consultation was launched by the government last week, and is described as the largest review of the relevant legislation since it was first introduced.
A 12-week consultation is now inviting views from residents directly about the change they want to see around the use of fireworks.
Among the issues of concern in the review are proposed restrictions to the availability of the noisiest fireworks, with louder products only being available to professional displays, and an increase on the number of banned products.
It also explores a review of the wider regulatory framework for fireworks classified as ‘lower risk’.
Olivia Bailey, MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire said: “I’ve heard from many local residents across Reading West and Mid Berkshire about the distress caused by the anti-social use of fireworks, including families in Tilehurst reporting having fireworks thrown at them, their pets and their homes.
“I’m pleased the Government is launching this major review, giving local people the chance to help shape new rules, and encourage my constituents to take part”
Kate Dearden, Minister for Consumer Protection, said: “Extremely loud fireworks used by individuals at all hours of the day and night has become a nightmare for many communities in recent years.
“The sound of large explosions on residential streets is a cause of fear, disrupted sleep, and does huge harm to our beloved pets.
“It is a practice that also often goes alongside wider forms of anti-social behaviour.
“Fireworks used properly are great fun, and we want the organised and licensed public displays which bring communities together to continue.
“That’s why we’re looking to limit the sale of loud fireworks only to these displays, and take them out of the hands of those who use them irresponsibly.
“This will crack down on anti-social behaviour and protect Britain’s pets.”
